Peter Riedesser

Peter Riedesser (born March 9, 1945 in Waldburg (Württemberg) ; † September 19, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German child and youth psychiatrist.

Life

Riedesser studied medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau and from 1979 was a doctor at the children's clinic at the Freiburg University Clinic . In 1984 he completed his specialist training as a child and youth psychiatrist , in 1988 he finished his psychoanalytic training and acquired the additional titles of “ psychotherapist ” and “ psychoanalyst ”. In the same year he completed his habilitation. As a senior physician, he headed the psychosomatic department of the Freiburg University Children's Clinic and in 1991 was appointed professor for child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Hamburg . He was also director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of Children and Adolescents atUniversity Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).

Riedesser was considered an expert in trauma (see also psychotraumatology ), who was one of the first to systematically examine the psychology of militarization and armed violence. In his research, he primarily dealt with psychological trauma in children.

Through his scientific work, Riedesser founded aid projects for underage war victims and was involved in the board of the International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War ( IPPNW ) until his death . As a committed representative of an updated Enlightenment and modern humanism , Riedesser was active on the scientific advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation . Riedesser was also a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg .
