Peter Ruta

Peter Ruta (born February 7, 1918 in Dresden ; † November 16, 2016 in New York actually Peter Paul Franke-Ruta ) was an American painter of German origin.

Life

Ruta's father, Walther Franke (1890 to 1958), was a Leipzig fur trader and writer. His mother was Else Stein. She was of Jewish descent and related to the publisher Gustav Kirstein . Ruta was born in Dresden, but grew up in Leipzig from 1919. The family moved to Italy in 1923 and added the name of the Ligurian village Ruta, where the family lived, to the family name "Franke" .

In 1936, Ruta emigrated to the USA at the age of 18. He started working as a painter here. He was later drafted into the US Army . After the Second World War , Ruta finished his training as a painter. He received a Fulbright scholarship in 1948 and studied in Rome and Venice , graduating from the Accademia in Venice. From 1953 to 1960 he lived in the fishing village of Positano on the Amalfi Coast, where he met painters who had emigrated from Central Europe, including Kurt Craemer and Karli Sohn-Rethel . Among other things, Ruta also became known to the art collector Peggy Guggenheim . His painting style was influenced by the simplicity of the surroundings and the clarity of the Mediterranean.

Ruta has lived in the USA since the 1960s, v. a. in New York and New Mexico , as well as in Mexico. In 2008 Ruta received a retrospective in his hometown of Leipzig, in 2010/11 an exhibition in Thurnau , mainly with paintings that were created in Positano in the 1950s, in 2011 an exhibition with more recent works in Lodi and Positano, and in 2012 an exhibition in Ravello also with Italian work.

Ruta was known for landscape painting and still life. He painted the panorama of New York from his studio on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center . One last painting was lost in the attack on September 11, 2001.
