Peter Scharff (chemist)

Peter Scharff (born March 15, 1957 in Braunlage ) is a German chemist . From 2004 to 2020 he was rector of the Technical University of Ilmenau .

Life

Peter Scharff studied chemistry at Clausthal University of Technology . There he obtained his doctorate in 1987 and his habilitation in 1991 in the field of inorganic chemistry . After completing a visiting professorship at the University of Thorn , he was appointed adjunct professor in 1996 . In 1999, Scharff accepted the call to a C4 professorship in chemistry at the TU Ilmenau. Between 2000 and 2004 he headed the Institute for Physics. From April 2004 to June 2020, Scharff was rector of the TU Ilmenau.

For his cooperation with Eastern European universities, he received an honorary professorship from the South Russian State Technical University in Novocherkassk and an honorary doctorate from the Moscow Energy Institute of the Technical University of Moscow . Since 2000 he has been a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .

As part of the International Student Week in Ilmenau in 2005, he was awarded the title of chief of a Nigerian Igbo tribe, so he bears the title "Onwa N'Etirioha 1 of Ilmenau" (in German: moon that shines for everyone, the first of Ilmenau) .
