Peter Thuruthikonam

Peter Thuruthikonam (born August 1, 1929 in Tiruvalla , Kerala , † September 5, 2011 in Kochi ) was an Indian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Vijayapuram .

Life

Peter Thuruthikonam began his religious studies at home as part of the Joseph mission and completed his studies in theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Saint Joseph's Institute in Aluva. He received on 12 March 1959, the sacrament of holy orders and was in the clergy of the diocese Vijayapuram incardinated . He has worked in Thiruvanchoor, Kanchrapara, Vadavathoor and Chengalam, among others. Thuruthikonam was mainly involved in missionary work. In 1966 he became chancellor of the diocese, later secretary to Bishop John Ambrose Abasolo y Lecue OCD. When Bishop Cornelius Elanjikal took office in 1971, he became Pro- Vicar General .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Vijayapuram on May 5, 1988 . The Archbishop of Verapoly Cornelius Elanjikal donated him episcopal ordination on August 4, 1988 ; Co- consecrators were Kuriakose Kunnacherry , Bishop of Kottayam , and Joseph Gabriel Fernandez , Bishop of Quilon . He was a member of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Kerala. He represented India in the CCA-FABC (Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences). On May 8, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Thuruthikonam died on September 5, 2011 of a heart attack in a private hospital in Kochi, to which he had been admitted a few days earlier due to cardiovascular problems .
