Cornelius Elanjikal

Cornelius Elanjikal ( Malayalam കൊർണേലിയൂസ് ഇലഞ്ഞിക്കൽ ; born September 8, 1918 in Kara near Kodungallur , Kerala , India ; † August 7, 2011 in Ernakulam in Kochi , Kerala) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Verapoly .

Life

Cornelius Elanjikal came from Kara near Kodungallur on the Malabar coast . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pontifical St. Joseph Seminary in Mangalapuzha in Aluva , a seminary of the Syro-Malabar Church of the Thomas Christians and one of the world's largest seminars for priests , as well as at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on March 18, 1945 in Rome . At the Pontifical Urban University , he was in philosophy of the Upanishads and 1948 with a dissertation on the topic De vicario cooperatore saeculari non beneficiali ( "Over the world spiritual vicar cooperator no sinecure") to Dr. iur. can. PhD .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 16, 1971 as the first Indian bishop of Vijayapuram . The Archbishop of Bangalore , Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , donated him episcopal ordination on April 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Jerome M. Fernandez , Bishop of Quilon , and John Ambrose Abasolo y Lecue OCD , Former Bishop of Vijayapuram. After the death of Joseph Kelanthara on October 19, 1986, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Verapoly .

Cornelius Elanjikal from 1987 to 1996 Chairman of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Bishops 'Council (KRLCBC) and 1989-1992 president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) . On June 14, 1996, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Elanjikal was known for his commitment to church music in Malayalam and composed over 500 songs himself. He published ten works, in particular on the philosophy of Hinduism and Veda , the religious texts in Hinduism. The book Concept of God in Upanishads is also a standard work for Hindu teachers. He was respected in the population for his commitment to the Dalit , the descendants of the Indian natives.
