Daniel Acharuparambil

Daniel Acharuparambil OCD (born May 12, 1939 in Palliport , India , † October 26, 2009 in Pachalam , Kerala ) was an Indian clergyman and Archbishop of Verapoly .

Life

Daniel Acharuparambil came from a village in what is now the Indian district of Ernakulam . In 1956 he joined the religious order of the Discalced Carmelites in Ernakulam and studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical St. Joseph's Seminary in Aluva . He was ordained a priest in 1966 . He then studied economics, philosophy and Indian philosophy at the University of Kerala , the Pontifical Athenaeum in Pune and the Banaras Hindu University . From 1972 he taught at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome . He received his doctorate in Indian philosophy in 1978 from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum . Acharuparambil taught in various theological institutes in Rome for two decades. In 1986 he became dean of the Faculty of Mission Studies at the Urbaniana; from 1988 to 1994 he was rector of the Urbaniana.

From 1990 to 1995 he was, among other things, advisor to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and advisor to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and later a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly in 1996 . He received his episcopal ordination on November 3, 1996 in Rome, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Jozef Tomko ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor Archbishop Cornelius Elanjikal and the Bishop of Cochin, Joseph Kureethara . 2008/2009 he was by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Cochin .

Acharuparambil was President of the Bishops 'Council of Kerala (Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council - KCBC) as well as the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Bishops Council (KRLCBC) and the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC).

He died as a result of organ failure.
