Francis Kallarakal

Francis Kallarakal (born October 10, 1941 in Kottapuram , India ) is an Indian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Verapoly .

Life

Kallarakal was ordained a priest on June 29, 1968 . From 1968 to 1970 he served at Pius X Church in Fairfield, Connecticut . At the local Fairfield University he also obtained his doctorate. From 1978 to 1986 he was secretary to the Archbishop of Verapoly.

On July 3, 1987, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the first bishop of the diocese of Kottapuram , which was established on the same date . The Archbishop of Verapoly, Cornelius Elanjikal , donated him the episcopal ordination on October 4th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Cochin , Joseph Kureethara , and the Bishop of Quilon , Joseph Gabriel Fernandez .

On February 20, 2010 he was by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of Verapoly.

On October 31, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
