Wernet's main research area is stem cell research . He sees somatic stem cells from umbilical cord blood as the better alternative to embryonic stem cells, since their use is less problematic both ethically and immunologically. As a founder, he played a key role in the expansion of the Düsseldorf blood bank into an umbilical cord blood bank at the Düsseldorf University Clinic. The umbilical cord blood bank is part of Netcord , an international association of umbilical cord blood banks, whose freezer tanks already hold 100,000 donations.
