Peter Hofmann , from 1917 to 1919 Freiherr von Hofmann (born July 10, 1865 in Vienna ; † May 7, 1923 there ) was an Austrian officer , most recently a general of the infantry in the First World War .

Life

The son of an army officer graduated from the Theresian Military Academy by 1884, and in 1889 he was appointed General Staff Officer and assigned to the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry . In 1911 he took over the command of a brigade in Bolzano as major general , and in April 1914 he was assigned to the 11th Corps Command in Lemberg . He was married and had two daughters.

As major general he was group commander of the later 55th kuk infantry division, soon called "Korps Hofmann". He reorganized this corps from landsturm troops and gendarmerie during the First World War after retreating to the Carpathian Mountains . In the Battle of the Carpathians Hofmann (since November 1, 1914 Lieutenant Field Marshal ), as in the Battle of Gorlice-Tarnów and in the Bug Offensive , successfully participated with his corps.

In 1917 the Hofmann corps became XXV. Corps reorganized. On August 17, 1917, Peter Hofmann was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order in the Villa Wartholz , which raised him to the status of Austrian baron. However, due to the end of the monarchy, the corresponding diploma was never issued. In February 1918 Hoffmann became General of the Infantry and remained Commanding General of the XXV until the end of the war . Corps.
