Peter von Oppeln (also Peter von Oppel ; † March 26, 1375 ) was Bishop of Lebus from 1366 to 1375 and Chancellor of the Mark Brandenburg in 1374.

Life

Origin and spiritual offices

Peter came from a patrician family in Breslau . In 1356 he was first mentioned as Canon of Lebus and as an official in Breslau . Later he was also provost of Opole and in 1357/58 dean in Glogau .

Bishop of Lebus

After the death of the Lubusz bishop Heinrich von Banz , he was elected as his successor by the cathedral chapter there and first mentioned as bishop on October 31, 1366. The papal confirmation took place on June 8, 1367. In 1368 he agreed with the Polish King Casimir the Great his episcopal rights to the monastery property located in Poland and the amount of the episcopal payments.

In 1369 he took part in the Brandenburg state parliament in Berlin , a year later in Krakow at the funeral for King Casimir the Great and then at the coronation of Ludwig I of Hungary as King of Poland.

In 1373 Lebus was destroyed in the armed conflict between the Brandenburg margrave Otto V of Bavaria and Emperor Karl IV . The bishop and the cathedral chapter left Lebus and lived in other places.

Chancellor of Brandenburg and royal guardian

In 1374 Charles IV appointed him Grand Chancellor ( cancellarius generalus ) of the Mark Brandenburg and gave him the guardianship "in provisional" over his sons Siegmund and Johann . During this time Peter resided in Tangermünde .
