The Pfaffenberg (331 m) near Deutsch-Altenburg is a foothill of the Hainburg Mountains and their main summit, Hundsheimer Berg (480 m), is directly in front.
While the Hainburg Mountains in the eastern part consist largely of crystalline rocks, the Pfaffenberg forms a younger (Mesozoic), hard limestone stock that has been used intensively as a quarry since Roman times . Presumably this degradation started much earlier. There was an important Jupiter temple at the summit.
Today the Pfaffenberg is terraced up to a height just below the summit by the quarry of Hollitzer Baustoffwerke Betriebs-Gesellschaft mbH (Rohrdorfer Group, CEMEX Group until 2015 ) and forms a dusty but very light contrast to the dark mountains behind it. The temple of Jupiter was partially destroyed under controversial circumstances.
There were plans to expand mining in the direction of “Hexenberg” above Hundsheim , which has long been part of a nature reserve . The quarries there were shut down during the 20th century. Serious concerns have been raised about these proposals and have been dropped. The main mining on the Pfaffenberg, however, is continuing intensively - which although it boosts the economy, affects tourism and the spa in nearby Bad Deutsch Altenburg . The political and environmental debates continue (as of 2007).
