The Roman Catholic parish church in Brandberg in the Zillertal is in a cemetery in the municipality of Brandberg in the Schwaz district in Tyrol . It is consecrated to the Holy Cross and belongs to the Deanery of Zell am Ziller in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . The structure, including the war memorial at the cemetery chapel and the surrounding cemetery, is a listed building .

history

The church was officially built in 1787 by Andreas Hueber and consecrated in 1808. In 1891 it was elevated to an independent parish church. When the church was built in 1786, a cemetery was created. This was extended to the south in 1980 and a new mortuary and cemetery chapel were built.

The church is a classical hall building with an east tower. The church tower connects to the choir yoke. The tower is crowned by a hood.

Church interior

The nave has three bays. The choir has a square floor plan. The flat ceiling above is not structured. The fresco in the choir shows Christ as a judge . It was made by Josef Haun in 1932.

Furnishing

The high altar is a columnar altar from the 18th century. The altarpiece from the first half of the 19th century shows the crucifixion of Jesus . The two side altars date from the first half of the 19th century. On the left altar there is a figure of St. Joseph from around 1790, on the right a Madonna figure from the first half of the 17th century.

The organ was made by the Mayer brothers in 1950.

There are two war memorials. The old war memorial on the north facade of the church was erected around 1950 (?) And shows a mosaic of St. Georg from 1916 (inscribed). Below is a bronze plaque with the names of those killed and missing from both world wars. The new war memorial is located on the east facade of the cemetery chapel and shows a plastic group of four bronze relief figures depicting a lamentation. It was designed by Hans Rieser in 1980.

Cemetery cross

The crucifix with a body in the four-nail type comes from the 2nd half of the 18th century. Originally placed above the entrance to the church, the crucifix was placed on a concrete base in a closed wooden box in the southern part of the cemetery in 2006.
