The parish church of Ober-Grafendorf is the Roman Catholic parish church of Ober-Grafendorf in Lower Austria .

Building history

Today the St. The parish church consecrated to Joseph has its origins in the second half of the 15th century. It is very likely that it was built over an older building, especially since the parish was built around 1250. More extensive structural changes took place in the years 1738–1756, with the southern side choir in particular being converted into a sacristy , while the tower received its current height and was provided with a slender, curved polygonal helmet. Finally, the north aisle was increased by one floor in 1880 by adding a gallery.

Look into the nave

The nave of the Gothic pillar basilica has four bays, with the central nave opening to the aisles in low pointed arcades. Above the south aisle there are upper clad windows from the 18th century, while on the north side this area is taken up by the gallery that was added later.

Choir

A ribbed vault, which is a little lower than the nave, spans the two-bay choir with a 5/8 end . The pointed arch windows are walled up.

The high altar was originally a side altar of the monastery church of the Carmelites of St. Pölten (today's Prandtauerkirche), which was profaned in 1782 in the Josephine era. In this way the comparatively small parish of Ober-Grafendorf came to an altarpiece by the important baroque painter Daniel Gran . It shows St. Josef and dates from 1750. The altarpiece is flanked by statues of St. Joachim and Anna , created by the sculptor Peter Widerin in 1742. The main altar is in the parish church of St. Stephan in Tulln , the second side altar in Michelhausen.

Above the very simple choir stalls there are large canvas pictures on both sides of the choir, which were created by Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky in 1856 and depict the parables of the prodigal son and the good Samaritan.

In the northern side choir with also walled-up pointed arch windows there is a statue of the Virgin Mary on a simple altar.
