Parish Church of St. George

The parish church of St. Georg is the Roman Catholic parish church of Zuzgen in the canton of Aargau . It stands near the south-eastern edge of the village on the main road, diagonally across from the parish store . The neo-Gothic church, consecrated to Saint George , was built in 1901/02 after the old parish church had passed to the Christian Catholics in 1878 .

history

In 1873, during the Kulturkampf, a Christian Catholic association was founded, which the cantonal government recognized as legally competent five years later. From 1878 on, the Roman Catholics were only allowed to use the parish church, built in 1737/38 and shared, for sermons, and the Lord's Supper had to be carried out in the neighboring parish warehouse. Since this solution was not sufficient in the long run, the decision to build a new church was made in 1900. In June 1901, the parish assembly approved a project by the architect August Hardegger , which was estimated to cost 54,500 francs. After a construction period of eleven months, the church could be used for the first time in July 1902. In 1972 the altars were restored, two years later the rest of the interior. A complete restoration took place in 2002.

Building

The church stands on a narrow strip of land between the main road and the Möhlinbach , facing up the valley towards the southeast. A choir built over five sides of the octagon adjoins the rectangular nave ; the church tower is built on its north side . A two-storey flat roof annex on the south side includes the boiler room and the sacristy connected to the choir . The slate roof rests on a gable on the west side , and above the choir it forms three hips . The sides of the nave and the choir feature lancet windows with plastered walls and granite cornices. A hexagonal porch protects the entrance to the west. The 36 meter high church tower has a pointed spire , the peal includes four bells from the H. Rüetschi foundry and an older bell from the 19th century.

Rising rib vaults characterize the interior, which is set in subdued light by the red, blue and gold colored glazing of the windows. Red, blue and gold ribs as well as flower and tendril patterns enrich the choir in a picturesque way, and there is also a dark wall hanging. The altar has damascene rectangular shrines with scenes from the Bible and saints in relief. The polygonal wooden pulpit with sound cover shows the six-winged evangelist symbols in its damascene cassettes.
