The parish church in St. Peter near Laion is dedicated to the Apostle Peter .

history

As early as 1241 a church in St. Peter near Laion , dedicated to St. Peter, is mentioned in writing. In 1448, the auxiliary bishop Andreas consecrated a conversion of the Romanesque church into the late Gothic style on behalf of Prince-Bishop Johann Röttel of the Duchy of Bressanone . In 1509 a new reconstruction of the apse of the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Konrad von Brixen, including a new cemetery. Around the middle of the 18th century a decision was made to rebuild the church and on April 8, 1764 the pastor of Lajen Franz Josef von Ingram blessed the foundation stone. On June 15, 1767, the church was given to the Prince-Bishop of Brixen Leopold von Spaur consecrated.

There has only been a parish in St. Peter since 1914. Pastoral care used to come from the parish of Laion.

Interior

The altars and the pulpit are in the Rococo style. The main altar is decorated with wooden statues of Saints Peter and Paul and numerous angels.

The altarpiece shows the parting of Peter from Paul and was made by Michael Cranpichler from the Augsburg School of Painting in 1778. Two side altars are dedicated to Our Lady (wooden statue of the Rosary Madonna by Franz Tavella around 1900) and Saint Joseph. Some of the wood-carved saints can be attributed to the workshop of the Val Gardena sculptor Vinazer .

Rococo pulpit

In the organ gallery, frescoes with the anointing of the Lord by Mary Magdalene, the healing of the lame by Peter, Saint Cecilia and the conversion of the apostle Paul were made by an unknown painter around 1764, according to Weingartner. The vault of the church hall was painted with frescoes by Josef Arnold the Elder in 1845.

An offering box on the south portal bears the year 1298. The church and choir stalls were made in 1878 by Johann Rainer. In 1837/38 the Reinisch company from Steinach built the organ, which in 1987 was subjected to a comprehensive restoration by the Pirchner company .

Outer walls

The length of the church is 27 m, the width 12 m.

On the western and southern outer walls, Josef Arnold and his sons made further frescoes. There are three rococo-style frescoes on the north facade.

In the cemetery area behind the apse there is a mortuary chapel with a retable with an image of the Madonna after Giovanni Bellini , made around 1540.
