Parish Church of St. Ulrich

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Ulrich near Feldkirchen in the municipality of Feldkirchen stands on a rocky hill towering in the middle of the village. It is surrounded by a former defensive wall that is greatly reduced in height. A church named “St. Odelrici “probably refers to Ortisei. In 1207 Ortisei was probably already a parish. Although the church was expanded into a fortified church at the time of the Turkish invasions , it was occupied by the Hungarians in 1481.

Building description

Gallery, organ

The church is a former Romanesque choir tower church , which was structurally changed in the Gothic and Baroque periods . The three-story, Romanesque tower with a bell cast by David Polster in 1648, round-arched sound openings and a pyramid roof is the same width as the Gothic choir. A Gothic sacristy with chamfered windows is attached to the wider nave in the south . There is a leg chamber under the sacristy . The open, brick porch protects the west arched portal. All roofs of the church are covered with stone slabs.

Inside the three-bay nave, a groin vault from the 17th century rises above pilasters . The three-axis west gallery rests on a groin vault and square pillars with capitals and bases from the 17th century. A chamfered triumphal arch connects the nave and the choir with a five-eighth end. The rib vault of the choir with a keystone was built in the first half of the 15th century. A Gothic, chamfered portal with an iron-studded door leads from the tower square into the sacristy from the first half of the 15th century. The remainder of a Romanesque round window can be seen above the sacristy door. The two eastern windows in the choir are Gothic, the northern and southern windows and the windows in the nave were changed in the 17th century.

Murals

Representations of the apostles in the tower floor

The frescoes on the north side of the choir from around 1500 were uncovered in 1951. The painted tabernacle , the miracle spring of Moses and the Mannalese are fragmented by a window opening. There is also a painted console with a male half-figure and a band of inscriptions with the inscription "Sanctus Sanctus Dominus". The frescoes on the tower ground floor from the end of the 13th century were uncovered in 1987/88. The depictions of the apostles with name inscriptions are fragmented. In the vault of the former choir tower square there is a starry sky as well as large and small circular framed rosette motifs. The remains of floral and grotesque paintings in the eastern triumphal arch were made around 1600.

Facility

Interior of the parish church

The high altar from the middle or the third quarter of the 18th century fills the entire height and width of the choir. The central figure of St. Ulrich is flanked by statues of two martyrs. The figures of St. Benedict and probably a Benedictine saint stand above the sacrificial passage portals . The left side altar is a shrine altar made around 1670 with twisted vine columns and angel heads. The shrine houses a crescent Madonna . The coronation of Mary is shown in the top picture. The right side altar, built around 1670, is similar in structure to the left one and has a sculpture of St. George on horseback in the niche . The upper picture shows Saints John the Baptist and Sebastian . Above the triumphal arch there is a crucifixion group with assistance figures of Saints Mary and John from the end of the 18th century painted on cut-out boards . The console figures of Saints Joseph , Florian and Johannes Nepomuk from the 18th century are also part of the church's furnishings .
