The Roman Catholic parish church of Stotzing is at the southern end of the village in the municipality of Stotzing in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Burgenland . The parish church of St. John the Baptist is part of the Eisenstadt dean's office in the Eisenstadt diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

The church was donated as a monastery church in 1594 and consecrated in 1610. In 1644 Servites were appointed and the church was elevated to a parish church. The church was destroyed during the Turkish War in 1683. After the discovery of a statue of the Virgin Mary venerated as a miracle worker, the reconstruction of the church began in 1743 with Georg Wimpassinger from Bruck an der Leitha. In 1745 the statue was transferred to the church. The church was consecrated in 1748. In 1787 the Servite monastery was closed and the building has served as a parsonage ever since. 1845 and 1890 were renovations. In 1930 the roof structure and the tower burned in a major fire in the village. An exterior restoration was carried out in 1965, an interior restoration in 1975.

architecture

The high baroque church building has a mighty western tower facade with a giant Ionic pilaster arrangement over two floors and with three axes. The upper floor with lateral volutes bears the stone figure of Mary as a so-called Bell Madonna in the central niche . The square tower has a heavy onion helmet. After a short intermediate yoke, a circular central room opens under a conical roof over the remains of the walls of the previous church. The round apse is low.

High altar

In the vestibule with a barrel vault an organ gallery with square vaults was built over two yokes. The gallery has a richly curved parapet. The round floor plan of the previous church was redesigned by incorporating four mighty pillars into a Greek cross . Above the square crossing is a hanging dome and above the arms are barrel vaults on Corinthian pilasters. In the south transverse arm are two oratorios with remarkable rococo lattices (1765/1766).

Furnishing

The interior of the church dates back to the time it was built. The high altar made of Stuccolustro was created by Elias Hügel from Kaisersteinbruch (1750/1751). The columnar altar has a high tower. In the central niche, under a canopy, the clothed stone miraculous image of Dear Lady is marked 1645. The side carved figures show John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The tabernacle bears angels.

The side altars from the years 1751/1752 are high wall altars with brown marble of the same structure. The left side altar shows the altarpiece Pietà with the seven founders of the Servite Order and the retable image of St. Guardian angel and carries the side figures hll. Servites Johannes Angelus and Peregrinus Laziosi and on the top angel with the instruments of suffering. The right side altar shows the altarpiece St. George. The reredos shows canon tables and an image of Mary, the side figures show the hll. Servites Franziskus Patrizi and Joachim Piccolomini, the essay bears trumpet angels. Both side altar pictures were painted from sketches by Michelangelo Unterberger .

Servite monastery / rectory

The former Servite monastery - donated in 1644, rebuilt in 1760 and closed in 1787 - adjoins the church to the south and serves as a parsonage. The former monastery building is a two-story building with six axes. The portal shows the year 1760 in the keystone.
