The former parish church of Thunau am Kamp is visible from afar in the lower southern outskirts of the Gars am Kamp castle ruins in the town of Thunau am Kamp in the market town of Gars am Kamp in the Horn district in Lower Austria . The former parish church, consecrated to the patronage of Gertrud von Nivelles , is now a burial church of the parish church of Gars am Kamp and belongs to the Horn deanery of the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

A chapel was mentioned in a document around 1100. The parish Gars-Thunau was the original parish for the founding of parishes in the Waldviertel. In a document, 1135 tithes were delivered by Babenbergers to the Bishop of Passau, the parish continued to be sovereign. A pastor was mentioned in a document in 1189.

Originally around 1250 the area of Eggenburg also belonged to the parish Gars-Thunau, subsequently a double parish was formed from 1267 to 1564, whereby the focus was soon shifted to Eggenburg in the fourth quarter of the 13th century. The owners of the parish Gars-Eggenburg were mostly dignitaries from the court, with Andreas Plank (1403–1435), Kaspar Wendl (1451–1465) educator of Ladislaus Postumus , Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (1500–1506), Thomas Eckher (1592–1603 ) with the construction of the rectory in Gars. In 1797 the parish was relocated to the Marktkirche hll. Simon and Judas in Gars, a demolition of the church could be prevented.

The church was built in the 12th century. In the first third of the 13th century to the middle of the 13th century, a three-aisled flat-roofed basilica was rebuilt. In the second half of the 13th century there was an extension to the west with the integration of the tower in the west facade. In the first half of the 14th century an expansion to the east followed with the construction of the three Gothic polygonal choirs. The stained glass was created around 1330. In the 15th century, with a documented foundation in 1395, the Johannes chapel was added to the south of the nave. At the end of the 17th century the tower was raised and finished with a stone dome. In 1786 a music gallery was built. In 1831 a wooden conical barrel was installed in the central nave and the nave windows bricked up. In 1953 the glass painting was restored. A restoration was carried out in 1972/1975, the cemetery was enlarged in 1974/1975 and the driveway to the church was rebuilt.

The church stands in the lower southern outskirts of the Gars am Kamp castle ruins and is surrounded by a cemetery with a charnel house. The entrance to the church has a staircase and a calvary.

The essentially Romanesque church, formerly a basilical three-aisled church building with a west tower and a Gothic three-apse closure, has an attached late Gothic chapel in the south.

Glass and wall paintings

Stained glass: The original three passes of the tracery have been preserved in the three choir windows. In the middle window, nine rectangular windows from the former choir glazing from 1315 and 1330, which were restored in 1953, are combined. Four discs show a cycle of the legend of St. Gertrud von Nivelles , the saint receives the tonsure from her mother, the miracle of light in the monastery church, salvation from distress at sea, and death and burial. Three discs show scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist , arrest, beheading, feast of Herod. Two disks are ornamental disks. Wall painting: In the area of ​​the three choirs and in the south aisle there are single pictures and sequences of scenes, these were discovered in 1880/1881 and uncovered in 1906. The pictures are all badly preserved. In the middle choir, the session niche has an ornamental painting from the first half of the 14th century, in the north choir there are fragments of 14 scenes of a legend of Catherine in two strips, on or above the east pillars of the central nave there is an Achatius marter , and five scenes from the legend of St. hll. Katharina and Wolfgang, on the south wall of the south aisle, fragmented figure and arcade frieze, all by the Master of Thunau, around the middle of the 14th century. On the middle pillar to the south aisle, a protective coat Maria from the middle of the 14th century. Entry into Jerusalem and Last Supper around 1400 on the south-east pillar of the central nave. Ornamental paintings with rosettes from the 14th century, 1985, have been exposed on the walls of the western nave arcades.
