The Gars am Kamp castle ruins are visible from afar in the town of Thunau am Kamp in the market town of Gars am Kamp in the Horn district in Lower Austria . The ruin of the hilltop castle built around 1120/1130 is a listed building ( list entry ).

description

The heterogeneously arranged assembly group of the Höhenburg stands on a terraced terrain sloping in three levels on the Kamp River .

On the highest level is the stronghold, enclosed by a circular wall, on the second central plateau-shaped terrace are the southern gate tower and the castle chapel , to the west a hall building from the 16th century and the surrounding fortifications from the 13th century on the third lower level on a related one Burgweg southern terrace is in a walled bailey the parish Thunau am Kamp . A small coat of arms of the Rotthal family (referred to in 1709) is located above the portal to the north tower.

use

The facility has been used as an event center since the 1970s and is the venue for open-air opera performances in summer .
