The Roman Catholic Wies parish church is located in the market town of Wies in the Deutschlandsberg district in Styria . The parish church , consecrated to the Scourged Savior, belonged to the then dissolved deanery Deutschlandsberg in the diocese of Graz-Seckau until the end of August 2018 ; since this deanery was closed, it has been located in the pastoral care area of Southwest Styria. The church is a listed building .

history

In 1753 a statue of the scourged Savior on the Wies was brought from Bavaria (where the pilgrims met in the Wieskirche ). It was placed on an altar in the chapel in Altenmarkt. In a document issued on October 7, 1760 by the pastor of Altenmarkt (today a cadastral parish of Wies), it is recorded that this was initiated by Count Georg Schrottenbach, owner of the local lordship of Burgstall. This miraculous image was very well known at that time and popular with many pilgrims. The statue was bought in the Upper Bavarian municipality of Steingaden .

Since the veneration of the Savior on the Wies increased rapidly, a chapel was built under Count Gundakar von Herberstein from 1756 to 1757 at the current location of the church, into which the statue was ceremonially transferred. More than 10,000 people are said to have been present at the time. In 1766 there were already 684 pilgrimages with 4,800 confessors. Countess Maria Anna von Schrottenbach suffered some severe blows of fate during these years and the building of a church became a matter of great concern to her. She supported the construction financially, which lasted from 1774 to 1782. The master builder was Johann Fuchs from Marburg , who built the church in Wies in the classicism style.

In 1798 the church was elevated to a parish church. The tower was built from 1800 to 1801 by the master builder Josef Rottmayer - the original tower bells fell victim to the First World War in 1916 . The statue of the Scourged Savior forms the center of the church's altar structure. There are statues of St. Mary , St. Joseph , St. Anna and St. Joachim by her .

The church became a pilgrimage center in the early 19th century . These pilgrimages to the Scourged Savior on the Wies , however, fell sharply after a catastrophic fire, the “Black Sunday” in 1850, and only recovered very hesitantly.

architecture

The square central room has wide bevelled corners with pilasters arranged there with a cranked cornice above.

The central room has a mighty flat dome with the fresco Ecclesia triumphans by the painter Toni Hafner (1956). The retracted lower two-bay choir with a flat lancet vault on straps has oratorios and a straight ending. The west gallery has a flat vaulted square.

Furnishing

The ceiling painting

The high altar around 1780 bears the statue of grace from the middle of the 18th century. There is a wrought-iron rococo choir grille from Mahrenburg.

The 400 m² ceiling painting of the parish church with the theme of the Te Deum by Anton Bruckner is considered one of the main works by the West Styrian artist Anton Hafner (1912–2012). The picture depicts the triumphant church as heavenly Jerusalem . It was created in 1956. In 2012, the church was elected “Styria's architectural jewel” with 19,912 votes.
