The Roman Catholic parish church in Zwerndorf is located in the village of Zwerndorf in the municipality of Weiden an der March in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. Pankratius and belongs to the deanery Gänserndorf in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is a listed building .

Location description

The former fortified church stands in the east of the village and originally formed a joint defense system with the rectory, the so-called "Melkerhof".

history

The vicariate was established after 1300. The former defensive tower from the first half of the 14th century in the east, which lies above the choir, has been preserved from the construction from the Middle Ages. The core of the nave is late Romanesque and dates from the 13th century. In 1783 the church was elevated to a parish church and incorporated into Melk Abbey . The church was officially rebuilt in the early historical style in 1858/1859 .

Church building

Church exterior

The west facade of the church building is simple and broad. The middle part is raised. In front of it is a stepped triangular gable on the west facade . Above the arched portal is an arched window and the Melker monastery coat of arms. The nave has arched windows on the north and south sides. Remains of the late Romanesque arched windows were found on the south side. These are plastered again today. In the base zone there is ashlar masonry . In the east, a mighty, early Gothic defense tower adjoins the nave. This also forms the choir of the church. On the east side is a narrow pointed arch window, on the west side is the former high entrance. There are loopholes and corner blocks on the church tower . The pyramid helmet dates from 1838. In the south, the sacristy adjoins the choir.

The three-aisled nave has four nave bays, with the central nave being slightly elevated compared to the aisles. The longship is cross-vaulted . The vault rests on square pillars, the most easterly being probably late Romanesque. In between they form arched arcades. The gallery is in three parts. The low, round-arched triumphal arch separates the nave from the choir. The early Gothic choir square is also the first floor of the tower. Above it is a deep-drawn ribbed vault with a keystone.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic high altar dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. It is a fixed wing altar with relief depictions of the "Annunciation" and the "Last Supper". The altar panel on the right side altar shows St. Pancras. It was documented by Josef Neugebauer in the third quarter of the 19th century. In front of the picture is a heart of Jesus figure from the end of the 19th century. On the left side altar is a Lourdes grotto with a figure of Mary . There are two neo-Gothic figures on the walls in the church. One depicts St. Anna Maria teaching reading, the second depicts St. Joseph . The figures date from the second half of the 19th century. The image of the Trinity comes from the 19th century. The stations of the cross emerged in the middle of the 19th century. The font was created in the 17th century. On the lid is a figural group depicting the "Baptism of Christ".

organ

The organ dates from a document from 1837.
