The Pfaudler GmbH in Schwetzingen , Baden-Württemberg founded when The Pfaudler Co. in the USA and named after the German brewmaster Caspar Pfaudler , manufactures enameled components and products for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

Pfaudler GmbH belongs to Deutsche Beteiligungs AG via Pfaudler Holding Sàrl, which is based in Luxembourg and has a total of 1,300 employees .

Company history

Caspar Pfaudlers idea was the fermentation of beer by vacuum to speed. The wooden barrels customary at the time were not suitable for this because they were not tight enough to hold the vacuum. The solution seemed to be steel tanks, but cleaning them turned out to be problematic.

First attempts with enamelled steel tanks promised success. Their smooth surface allowed the tanks to be cleaned easily and without problems, and unlike glass containers, steel-enamelled containers can withstand high pressures and vacuum.

Pfaudler founded The Pfaudler Co. together with donors and began the production of enamelled steel containers in Rochester , USA, in 1884 . Soon people in Europe became aware of this new method of brewing beer. However, the transport of the large, internally enamelled steel tanks to Europe was time-consuming and costly. A plant in Germany became necessary. The choice for the new plant in Germany fell on Schwetzingen in Baden , where several breweries had already established themselves.

In the 1930s, the chemical industry also discovered enamelled containers for their purposes. The pharmaceutical companies soon followed suit .

Until the end of February 2013, Pfaudler Werke GmbH was wholly owned by the listed US company Robbins & Myers, Inc. After it was bought by the American group National Oilwell Varco (NOV), ownership of Pfaudler Werke GmbH also took place in February 2013 this over. The next change of ownership was due at the end of 2014. The German Beteiligungs AG takes over the Pfaudler group. In 2017 the headquarters and the operating location were relocated from Schwetzingen to Waghäusel .

The Pfaudler Group has plants in the USA, Brazil, Germany, India, Scotland and China.

History of Pfaudler Werke, Germany

  • 1907: The idea of enamelled containers met with great interest in Europe, but the freight costs for the bulky, heavy containers were extremely high. The decision is made: a manufacturing facility is set up in Europe. Because of its central location, the choice fell on Germany and there on Schwetzingen, a city in the industrial location Rhine-Neckar.
  • 1908: Pfaudler Schwetzingen starts production, initially as an enamelling plant.
  • 1910: The shell construction hall and workshops are built, Pfaudler Werke AG produces in-house with a workforce of 120 to 150 people. In the first few years, orders for enamelled steel tanks came from Germany and across Europe.
  • 1917: Temporary end due to the confiscation of the plant. The plant served as a warehouse for dismantled machines from France.
  • 1921: Production resumes. The enamelling technology is improved and enables an ever better adaptation to the individual wishes of the customers. With the addition of the furnace, larger containers can be enamelled in one piece. In the course of a few years, enamelled containers became established throughout the beverage industry.
  • 1926: Other branches of the food industry are interested in the material enamel, not only as a storage container, but also for production systems. The enamelled, heatable agitator tank became the cornerstone for later success in the chemical industry. In the 1930s, the chemical industry already accounted for a third of total sales. The high and differentiated requirements made by the chemical industry - e.g. B. in corrosion resistance, expansion behavior and adhesive strength - can only be achieved through fundamental research into the material steel enamel.
  • 1935: Manufacture of the first heated enamelled stirred tank in Europe for the chemical industry
  • 1940: Due to the Second World War, the connection to the parent company in Rochester and to the other plants is broken.
  • 1942: Development of the first chemical enamel at Pfaudler
  • 1945: Shortly before the end of the war, the factory, which had been intact until then, was largely destroyed by a bomb attack. Just eight months later, after clearing up work in Schwetzingen, the first post-war container was enamelled.
  • 1948: The number of employees is back to 150. But sales are getting off to a very slow start - the beverage industry is foregoing the advantages of steel enamel due to the prevailing capital shortage and is turning to cheaper products such as aluminum containers or plastic-lined steel tanks. All efforts are therefore concentrated on the production and sale of chemical apparatus.
  • 1950: In the 1950s the workforce increases to over 550 employees.
  • 1953: Pfaudler Schwetzingen develops the first acid- and alkali-resistant chemical apparatus enamel, further enamels follow. Constant expansion of the production program.
  • 1957: The new administration building is occupied. The former “large furnace” is built as a hood-type annealing furnace of the most modern design - containers of 50,000 liters can be enamelled in one piece.
  • 1959: New body shop and electric furnace for containers up to 80,000 l and an electrical output of 2400 kW.
  • 1962: New large assembly hall.
  • 1965: Development and market launch of the enamel "Nucerite"
  • 1969: The first enamelled measuring probes are manufactured at Pfaudler - a decisive step from the container manufacturer to the system provider.
  • 1972: Pfaudler builds the largest enamelled polymerisation tank in the world. Opening of a new research laboratory.
  • 1976: First enamelled heating / cooling coils, called HRS for short.
  • 1980: Pfaudler patent DE30078718, "Enamelled stirrer and process for its manufacture and assembly", "Cryo-Lock process"
  • 1982: The main furnace is expanded to a maximum container volume of 120,000 liters.
  • 1984: Development of the Pfaudler service organization: spare parts, external assembly and Reemail.
  • 1988: Introduction of the new WWG enamel: The chemical and physical properties are 20 percent higher than the previous enamels.
  • 1994: Takeover by Robbins & Myers, USA.
  • 1996: Development of multi-stage agitation systems and corresponding special turbines (MFI / PBT / FBT / RCI), Pfaudler-flexeal mechanical seal, new BT valve series, Quatro-Pipe - the multifunctional baffle, Safety Swing (overfill protection).
  • 2001: New development of pharmaceutical enamel (low in heavy metals) PPG.
  • 2003: New baffle shape, C baffle, better interference effect.
  • 2004: New lid shape with melted glass look and fillook.
  • 2005: Further development of the half-pipe coil jacket: PCC (Pfaudler-Clean-Cloil).
  • 2008: Improvement of the previous Anti-Static Email: Introduction of ASG.
  • 2010: Launch of abrasion-resistant enamel ARG
  • 2013: Takeover of Pfaudler Werke GmbH by National Oilwell Varco
  • 2014: Takeover of Pfaudler Werke GmbH by Deutsche Beteiligungs AG
  • 2015: Pfaudler Werke GmbH becomes Pfaudler GmbH
  • 2017: the owner of Pfaudler Werke decides to sell the site in Schwetzingen to a housing company and relocate the production site to Waghäusel .
