Caspar Pfaudler (born April 4, 1861 in Oberkochen ; † June 6, 1889 in Buffalo , NY ) was a German master brewer and co-founder of the Pfaudler factory .

Caspar Pfaudler was born the fifteenth of a total of sixteen children. His parents Michael Pfaudler (carpenter and oil miller) and Barbara Pfaudler emigrated to the United States via Antwerp in December 1864 with their four children who were still alive . The family landed in New York City on March 1, 1865 .

Following an idea, the fermentation process of beer by vacuum to accelerate, Caspar Pfaudler was looking for a container that were contrary to the then usual wooden barrels, capable of high pressure and vacuum to withstand. He found the groundbreaking solution to the problem in steel tanks with an enamelled inner surface.

In North America, Caspar Pfaudler found courageous founding partners with a corresponding vision for his idea and with them founded the Pfaudler-Vacuum-Fermentation Process Co. , which was later renamed “The Pfaudler Co.”. In 1884 this company began its pioneering work in Rochester , New York : the construction of the first glass-enameled steel tanks.

The original idea of accelerating fermentation by vacuum did not catch on later in practice, but the enamelled container soon proved its vast superiority over the wooden barrels that had been customary up to that time. The glass interior walls only required a fraction of the maintenance work and also offered a guarantee for the consistent quality of the beer.

Back then, the containers were designed as so-called ring tanks . Individual rings about one meter long and up to three meters in diameter were screwed together with flanged flanges to form containers of different lengths. After the great advantage of enamelled tanks became more and more popular in Europe, Pfaudler finally founded a plant in Schwetzingen , Germany , in 1908 .

Caspar Pfaudler died very young on June 6, 1889 in Buffalo in his Residence No. 852 Michiganstreet. His name survived with the Pfaudler tanks.
