The peacock angelfish ( Pygoplites diacanthus ) is the only species of the genus Pygoplytes from the angelfish family (Pomacanthidae).
distribution
It has a wide distribution area that extends from the Red Sea over the Indian Ocean to the Pacific to Tahiti . It is the most common angelfish in the Great Barrier Reef on Australia's northeast coast . Peacock angelfish live at depths of 1 to 50 meters, mostly 10 to 20 meters, in areas with strong coral growth and many hiding places.
behavior
The animals mostly live individually, but sometimes as a couple. They are always on the move, searching caves and crevices for food. Young animals live there true to their location in hiding places in the reef.
nutrition
Peacock angelfish seem to be food specialists that only feed on sponges and sea squirts .
Aquarium keeping
Peacock angelfish are occasionally imported for keeping in saltwater aquariums. The fish is considered to be an extremely sensitive, difficult carer that often refuses to feed and dies after a few weeks. Even in large show aquariums, it rarely lives longer than six months. Responsible enthusiasts should refrain from buying. This applies to all great angelfish.
