Phantom Blue was an all women heavy metal band from Hollywood , California . They existed from 1988 in changing alumni.

Band history

Michelle Meldrum (guitar), Gigi Hangach (vocals), Nicole Couch (guitar), Debra Armstrong (bass) and Linda McDonald (drums) formed Phantom Blue in 1988. The only demo came out that same year and caught the interest of Shrapnel Records . Shortly before the contract was signed, they separated from Armstrong and Kim Nielsen joined the band. To the first single Why Call It Love? a music video was shot. The accompanying self-titled debut album was recorded with Marty Friedman , who u. a. involved in songwriting . In Europe the album was released through Roadrunner Records . It sold well and the band got quite a following.

Spurred on by the first successes, it was decided to change management and got a new record deal with the major label Geffen Records . Built to Perform , the second album, was therefore not released until 1993, as the work was repeatedly delayed by the contract negotiations. Max Norman , who u. a. already worked for Ozzy Osbourne , Megadeth and Loudness , took over the production. The album couldn't meet the great expectations and so the band lost their contract.

After the album, alumni problems develop, which ensure that only drummer Linda McDonald and singer Gigi Hangach remain from the original line-up for the next album Prime Cuts & Glazed Donuts . Michelle Meldrum moved to Sweden and founded her own band Meldrum there . She died on May 21, 2008 of a cyst in the brain, the sudden bleeding of which could not be stopped.

Gigi Hangach took over the singing post until 1997 and can also be heard on the live album Caught Live (1997). After that, the line-up finally breaks apart and it was not until 2000 that a stable alumni was found, who so far released the EP Full Blown and regularly plays live.

Linda McDonald is also active in the cover band The Iron Maidens , which describes itself as "the world's only female tribute to Iron Maiden ".

On May 26, 2009, McDonald, Hangach and Nielsen met as Phantom Blue for the Michelle Meldrum Memorial Concert at Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. Meldrum's position was filled by Tina Wood of the 1997 lineup, while Sara Marsh and Courtney Cox of The Iron Maidens replaced Nicole Couch.
