Pharaoh's Island is an island in the Thames about 30 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of the City of London .

geography

The island is located around 300 meters west of Shepperton Lock in the city of Shepperton in the very south of the Spelthorne district , which is bounded here by the Thames. The south bank of the Thames is already part of the Runnymede district .

In the series of islands in the Thames , Pharao's Island is 220 meters above (northwest) Hamhaugh Island and 5.8 km below Penton Hook Island .

Ordnance Survey maps from 1883 and 1896 show the island under the name Dog Ait . The island once belonged to Admiral Nelson , who received it as a gift after his victory in the Battle of the Nile (1798) and used it as a fishing resort. Today there are 23 residential buildings on the island, which - with the exception of Sunset Cottage and Willow Hayne - have Egyptian house names .

The residential buildings adjacent to the island on the north and south banks of the Thames also have house names, with the exception of those on Hamhaugh Island, which have house numbers . Residential buildings with house names do not have house numbers.

There is no bridge to the island, so it can only be reached by boat. 14 of the 23 buildings have their own landing stage.

Two opposite slipways on the north and south sides divide the island into a smaller western part and a larger eastern part. There is another, smaller slipway in the southeast at Sunset Cottage .
