Philip "Phil" Ferns (born November 14, 1937 in Liverpool , † August 25, 2007 in Bournemouth ) was an English football player . Mostly only used in the reserve team of Liverpool FC , he was a defensive player on the left side of the team that won the domestic championship in 1964 .

Athletic career

Ferns was a sturdy defender who could be used on the left as both a defender and a runner . After playing in Liverpool youth national teams, he joined Liverpool FC . In September 1957 he was only hired as an amateur before signing a professional contract in March 1958. After his debut in the reserve team in the 1957/58 season, he was used exclusively in the second team before he was first considered in the professional team of Bill Shankly in the 1962/63 season . He made his debut on August 29, 1962 in a 4-1 win against Manchester City and a total of five top division games that year - three times as a substitute for Tommy Leishman on the left half position and twice for Ronnie Moran as a left-back. When the "Reds" won their sixth English championship in the club's history in 1964 , Ferns was sufficiently involved to receive an official medal. He alternately represented regular players such as Gerry Byrne , Ronnie Moran and Willie Stevenson . After that he was only considered four more times in the first team and in August 1965 he moved to the third division Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic . Here he came, as well as later with the league rivals Mansfield Town , for whom he acted for two years from August 1966, more regularly to train and completed a total of 102 championship games. He later let his active career fade away at clubs such as Rhyl FC and Poole Town on an amateur basis.

His son of the same name, born in Liverpool in 1961 , later also became a professional footballer and played like his father in Bournemouth.
