Phil Spalding

Phil Spalding (actually Philip Spalding , born November 19, 1957 in London , England ) is an English bass player . He is a well-known session musician, has worked with artists such as Mick Jagger , Seal , Elton John , Randy Crawford and Mike Oldfield and was a member of GTR . Its main instrument is the Fender Precision Bass .

Career

As a child, Spalding was initially a successful model and appeared in television commercials. He later worked as an IT technician at a bank before joining the rock musician Bernie Tormé's band in 1976 and the Original Mirrors shortly thereafter .

In December 1980 he got an engagement with the singer Toyah , which lasted until 1983. He wrote songs with Toyah's band, recorded them in the studio and went on tour. He then became a member of a successful but short-lived rock supergroup called GTR around guitarists Steve Hackett and Steve Howe .

For Mike Oldfield he was a session musician on the album Crises and tour musician for the album Discovery . He played the bass on Oldfield's most famous single, Moonlight Shadow . When recording, Spalding used a fretless version of the Fender Precision Bass at a short notice from Oldfield . According to his own reports, Spalding was initially unsettled by this choice of instruments. Ultimately, however, he benefited from the key of E major used , in which the essential bass tones match the dot markings on the fingerboard.

More recently, Spalding has played for Michel Polnareff , Suggs , Robbie Williams , Kylie Minogue and Simon Townshend . He also recorded all the bass tracks for the soundtrack to The Lion King .

After contracting his own hepatitis C disease, Spalding is committed to the interests of those affected by this disease. In July 2008, he appeared on the BBC Oxford News promoting a vaccination study. Spalding has founded a support group for hepatitis C positives in Swindon and is working with the non-profit organization Liver4Life to raise awareness of the disease.
