Phil Szczesny (born December 3, 1992 ) is a German sevens national rugby player . In the club he plays at Hannover 78 and won the European championship title with the German team in 2019.

Career

In the club he plays at Hannover 78 . In the 2012/13 season his team made it to the quarter-finals of the knockout round. There they failed with 7:13 at the RG Heidelberg , Szczesny was able to score points in the first half. In the 2014/15 season, his team failed again in the quarter-finals, this time at SC Neuenheim . However, he was absent from this game. In the 2018/19 season he went back to the semifinals. After a 3:57 against the Berlin rugby club there it was over again.

National team

In the national team, he already took part in the Hong Kong Sevens 2016 , as well as in qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games . There he failed with the team at the tournament in Monaco on the favorite Samoa. When all the players of the German rugby union team boycotted the world ranking game against the Chilean selection in November 2017 , he moved up along with some other players. The game was lost at 10:32, but Szczesny was able to score at least a few points. When Sevens Grand Prix Series in Polish Łódź , he could with his crew then in September 2018, the first time the European vice-champion title celebrations. He was then back in the squad for the qualifying tournament for the 2020 Olympic Games . There it went only to the quarter-finals where he and his team in Colomiers, France, were clearly defeated by Ireland with 0:21 . After a fourth place in the first tournament of the Grand Prix Series series, the victory of a tournament in the series was achieved for the first time in July 2019, with which the European championship title was finally achieved. In September 2019, the fourth place at the Oktoberfest Sevens was there.

Professionally he is a sports soldier and lives in Verden . Pascal Fischer , who also plays rugby, is his cousin.
