Philip Douglas Knights, Baron Knights CBE , QPM ( October 3, 1920 - December 11, 2014 ) was a British police officer and life peer .

life and career

Knights attended school in Grantham . In 1937/1938 he joined the Lincolnshire Police as a police cadet and became a constable in 1940 . During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force from 1943 to 1945 .

He returned to Lincolnshire and rose to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 1957 . In 1959 he moved to the Birmingham City Police as Assistant Chief Constable . From 1963 to 1966 he was Deputy Commandant of the Police Staff College . He became Deputy Chief Constable in 1970 . In 1972 he moved to Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary as Chief Constable , in 1974 he was this for the South Yorkshire Police , from 1975 to 1985 he was Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police .

In 1983 he was criticized for failing to discipline officers from the West Midlands Special Branch investigating the case of CND activist Madeline Haigh .

From 1978 to 1979 Knights was President of the ACPO . He served on the board ( council ) of Aston University from 1985 to 1998 and the Committee Warks CCC in 1985-1989. In the Police Foundation , he was 1979-1998 member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ). From 1986 to 2003 he was a member of the Advisory Council of the Cambridge Institute of Criminology .

Membership in the House of Lords

Knights was named Life Peer as Baron Knights , of Edgbaston in the County of West Midlands, on July 22, 1987 . In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER . He gave his inaugural address on April 20, 1988.

On the website of the House of Lords, he named law and order, the police, city centers and municipal administration as topics of political interest.

He last spoke up on April 15, 1999. On December 14, 2005, he last took part in a vote.

At the end of the 1990s he occasionally took part in meeting days. In the following years, however, this decreased sharply. In later years he was absent.

Other offices

Knights was Vice President ( Vice President ) of the Warwickshire County Cricket Club , the Birmingham County Scout Council and the Birmingham Federation of Clubs for Young People .

Honors

He was honored with the QPM in 1964. Knights received his Knight Bachelor degree in 1980 . In 1971 he became a member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and in 1976 Commander (CBE). Knights became a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute in 1977 .

In 1985 he became Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of West Midlands . The Aston University honored him in 1996 with the awarding of an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).
