Philip von Schantz (born February 21, 1928 in Norrköping , † August 13, 1998 ) was a Swedish artist , painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Philip von Schantz began painting in 1950 at Otte Sköld's private painting school in Stockholm . In 1951 he was in Paris , for a short time also with André Lhote . 1952-58 he attended the Royal Art Academy Kungliga konsthögskolan in Stockholm.

During the 1970s he became popular for his naturalistic depictions of berries in large piles and of fruits and potatoes in boxes, bowls, and enamel buckets. His work showed with great diligence the smallest detail, where every single currant or gooseberry could be counted. The perspective was always exactly from the side and the objects depicted in the still life were natural size, which he had often harvested himself or found in nature.

In 1988 he moved into his newly built studio in Gåsviken on the Väddö Canal , near the Uppland coast . At the same time, a new element came into his works: cups and urns, sometimes with ducks, formed in their arrangement sophisticated, optical illusions for the viewer. In the 1990s he integrated the Swedish arable landscape with the typical red barns and stables into his pictures. Here, too, he uses his striking perspective with only one vanishing point .

Philip von Schanz was a professor at the art college from 1963 to 1973 , which he himself attended as a student. From 1973 to 1977 he was head of the modern museum Moderna museet in Stockholm and from 1987 to 1993 he was chairman of the art academy Kungliga Akademien för de fria konsterna in Stockholm. In 1991 and 1992 he also illustrated the Nobel Diploma for Ronald Coase , Georges Charpak , and Gary S. Becker .

Philip von Schantz was one of Sweden's most popular artists when he died at the age of 70. In 2000 the Swedish Post honored him with two stamps with his motifs.
