Philipp Bachmann

Philipp Georg Otto Bachmann (born October 13, 1864 in Geißlingen (now part of Oberickelsheim ), Uffenheim district , † March 18, 1931 in Erlangen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and educator.

After studying Protestant theology and philology in Erlangen and the first theological exam in Ansbach in 1887, Bachmann became a repetitionist for the New Testament at Erlangen University in 1888 . In 1890 he was given a pastor's post in Urfersheim , but in 1892 he went to Nuremberg as a high school professor . In 1902 he was appointed full professor for systematic theology in Erlangen and from 1909 also taught New Testament exegesis. From 1912 until his death he was also a university preacher.

Bachmann contributed to numerous volumes of Theodor Zahn's commentary series on the New Testament and wrote the commentaries on the two letters to the Corinthians himself . He also wrote textbooks for religious education and intervened in the struggle for religious education in the Weimar Republic through several publications .

From 1919 Bachmann represented his faculty in the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and served as its president from 1924.

The University of Greifswald awarded Bachmann an honorary theological doctorate in 1905 . In 1911 he received the Order of Merit from St. Michael (4th grade) and in 1916 the King Ludwig Cross .
