Reviews

  • Bayerischer Rundfunk : "Philipp Fussenegger shows how you can draw fascinating characters with few resources - without revealing too much, without doctoring around psychologically, simply with images and sounds that create an almost hypnotic pull."
  • Jury reasons for the First Steps Award: "The impressive and intimidating backdrop of the St. Blasien monastery, organ pipes and boys 'choir, the poorly concealed atrocities of a boys' boarding school: it quickly becomes clear who is dispute with whom for the place at the organ and thus also in the hierarchy of the boarding school will do. The two young actors Nino Böhlau and Lukas Till Berglund are great opponents - the one confidently defiant, the other confidently silent. But this fight for genius and validity is not carried out with words anyway, but with organ music from Bach to Arvo Pärt, and Chopin's revolutionary etude also plays a special role. A cinematic force that is powerful in terms of images and sound! "
  • Jury statement for the Max Ophüls Prize for “Best Man”: “A boy in search of belonging. If he thinks he is making a friend, we quickly see that he is going to take advantage of his need for closeness, and we watch as the boy moves towards a traumatic turning point in his life. The film tells this path with two incredibly strong actors, ambivalent, and with an ending that is so courageous and powerful that it forces the viewer to confront it. "
