occupation

Henry is a German medium-length feature film by Austrian- born director Philipp Fussenegger , which premiered on October 24, 2015 at the 49th Hof International Film Festival.

action

The musically gifted but emotionally introverted Henry (14) is coming to a private and secluded music boarding school for the new school year. There he meets the ambitious and self-confident classmate Erik (14), who as an outstanding organist is the figurehead of the school. Henry has to move into Erik's room and is introduced to everyday school life by him. Both of them come under increasing pressure: One because he is being pushed out of his isolation and the other because the newcomer is increasingly questioning his abilities. Because Henry not only discovered his fascination and passion for Erik's preferred organ playing, but also his first feelings for Erik's girlfriend. The two become bitter competitors. Erik, Mik (14) and Sebastian (13) tease and sabotage Henry wherever they can. Only when he secretly plays the organ does Henry find the peace and refuge he longed for from the problems in the boarding school. When the music teacher and choir director finally becomes aware of Henry's talent, his position towards the roommates worsens. Erik and his friends do everything in their power to prepare Hell on earth for Henry. In the end, not only does blood flow, Erik also has to leave the boarding school forever.

production

Production history

It acts with Henry to a production of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne . For director Philipp Fussenegger, who studied here and took over the direction of the film, the subject of music addressed in the film also has autobiographical traits, because he himself was a student at a music conservatory, which, according to his own statements, has shaped his life.

The film was produced by funfairfilms and the Art Academy for Media Cologne in cooperation with the University for Television and Film Munich . Many sponsored the project, such as the Film and Media Foundation NRW , Come On / Kultur Niederösterreich, the State of Salzburg, the State of Vorarlberg and the Sankt Blasien college . In spite of everything, the production was more expensive than expected and so the production had to acquire further funds through a crowdfunding campaign . The actor Leon Löwentraut , who plays the role of Mik, even made some of his internationally traded paintings available especially for this purpose .

You can watch the making of the film on VIMEO .

Casting

Philipp Fussenegger (r.) With the actors Nino Böhlau (l.) And Lukas Till Berglund

Because the director wanted to cast the roles with the best actors, the production invited 400 young people across Germany to the casting. In the end, in addition to Lukas Till Berglund, who played the main role, the young Nino Böhlau stood out. He was not only convincing as an actor, for his role he also had to learn parts of Chopin's revolutionary etude in a short time. He played this almost flawlessly after just a few exercises. Later during the shoot, according to the director, the greatest difficulty was “that there was no continuous shooting, but that we had to follow the school calendar of our protagonists and our locations. The shooting was integrated into everyday school life at the Sankt Blasien college. When the students were in class, we turned in the corridors, there weren't any organ lessons in the ballroom, then we sat down to the piano or the organ. The whole crew also always had lunch with the teaching staff or the boarding school groups. The boarding school gave us a rotation rhythm that we had to adapt to. In retrospect, it's kind of amusing that the film team also had to go through a timed daily routine in the college. "

review

Bayerischer Rundfunk : "Philipp Fussenegger shows how you can draw fascinating characters with few resources - without revealing too much, without doctoring around psychologically, simply with images and sounds that create an almost hypnotic pull."

FAZ “Philipp Fussenegger appeared much more dazzling. Outwardly somewhere between high elf and crystal chandelier, he now offered all those who doubted his film “Henry” the mirrored forehead: “Many people said at the beginning that you couldn't do it. But I kept telling myself and everyone else that we can do it. We can do it! ”Art break, political endorsement:“ Oh, and if I can say that as an Austrian - then you can do it too ”."
