Philipp Gutbrod

Philipp Gutbrod (* 1971 in Rochester ) is a German-American art historian and director of the Mathildenhöhe Institute in Darmstadt . In this role, he heads the exhibition building on Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt as well as the Museum Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt and the Darmstadt Municipal Art Collection.

Life

Philipp Gutbrod grew up in Berkeley , California and Heidelberg and studied art history, public law and classical archeology at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich . Equipped with a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation , he received his doctorate in 2004 with a thesis on " Wols (1913–1951) - The Works on Paper (Annotated, Critical Catalog of Works)". At the same time, he was involved in teaching and research as part of a research center at the German Forum for Art History , Paris, in collaboration with the Art History Institute of the Free University of Berlin .

From 2005 to 2011 Gutbrod worked in the USA in the art market, giving several lectures and published essays and books. Since July 2011, Philipp Gutbrod has been employed as exhibition curator and collection curator at the Mathildenhöhe Institute and is therefore responsible for the conceptual development, planning and implementation of exhibitions and exhibition publications as well as the scientific supervision of the Darmstadt Municipal Art Collection and its presentation in the Museum Künstlerkolonie and in public space. In addition, there was a significant contribution to the Mathildenhöhe Magistrate Commission, which oversees the application of the “ Mathildenhöhe Artists Colony ” for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2015 Gutbrod was appointed Deputy Director of the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt and has now - since April 15, 2015 - as director of the institution.

Gutbrod curated numerous exhibitions on art from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, such as " Bernhard Hoetger - Der Platanenhain" (2013), " August Lucas - Who looks for angels" (2013/14) and " Gregor Schneider in the sculptor's studios" (2015/16). He is the author of numerous books, essays and lectures, such as B. “ Baumeister versus Sedlmayr - The Controversy about Art and Religion in the First Darmstadt Conversation 1950” (2006) or “ Otto Dix - The Art of Living” (2009).

Gutbrod is married to the singer Micaela Leon and has two sons. Gutbrod is the son of the physicist Hans Gutbrod .
