Philipp Ludwig Wittwer

Philipp Ludwig Wittwer (born May 19, 1752 in Nuremberg ; † December 24, 1792 there ) was a German doctor , author and editor of numerous medical and medical history works.

Life

Wittwer studied medicine, initially under the direction of his father Johann Conrad Wittwer, and later at the universities of Altdorf and Strasbourg . At the University of Strasbourg, he became the inaugural dissertation "sistens ideam dispensatorii nostris temporibus accommodati" the doctorate .

He traveled to Paris for further training and settled in Nuremberg on his return. There he became a member of the College of Doctors. In 1783 Wittwer was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Altdorf, but a year later he gave up his teaching post for health reasons. He traveled extensively in order to recover, but returned to his hometown without any improvement in his health.

Philipp Ludwig Wittwer died in Nuremberg on Christmas Eve 1792 at the age of 40. Since February 9, 1789 he was a member of the Pegnese Flower Order under the name Chiron II.

Honors

In 1781 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Only the first volume of his “Archive for the History of Pharmacy in Its Entire Extent” , which he published, appeared. He did a great job as the editor of collected dissertations at the University of Strasbourg, which have appeared in four volumes
