Philippe Dollinger

Philippe Dollinger (born December 1, 1904 in Strasbourg ; † September 14, 1999 ibid) was a French historian who was best known for his research on the Hanseatic League .

Philippe Dollinger attended the Fustel de Coulanges high school. Dollinger studied history at the University of Strasbourg . He was a student of Marc Bloch , Charles-Edmond Perrin and Lucien Febvre . In 1931 the Agrégation d'histoire et geographie followed . From 1932 to 1945 he worked as a high school teacher in Colmar, Reims, Strasbourg and Paris. From 1932 to 1934 he worked at the Institut français in Berlin and in Bavarian archives. In 1945 Dollinger became a professor of Alsatian history at the University of Strasbourg and was head of the "Institut des hautes études alsaciennes". In 1947 he received his doctorate from the University of Strasbourg with the thesis L'évolution des classes rurales en Bavière depuis la fin de l'époque carolingienne jusqu'au milieu du treizième siècle Dollinger also taught German history and, since 1952, gave a collective report with Robert Folz of the published books on the history of Germany in the Middle Ages. From 1948 to 1974 he was director of the city archives and the city library in Strasbourg. A year later he also retired as a university teacher.
