Philippe Monnier (born November 2, 1864 in Geneva , † June 21, 1911 in Plainpalais ) was a Swiss journalist and writer .

Life

Philippe Monnier was born in Geneva as the son of the writer Marc Monnier . He was married to Marguerite Micheli, daughter of the mayor of Bardonnex , Louis Micheli.

Monnier studied law at the University of Geneva and graduated in 1888 with a licentiate . During his studies he became a member of the Société d'Étudiants de Belles-Lettres in Geneva . Stays in Paris and Florence followed until 1897 . He then settled with his family in Cartigny in the canton of Geneva .

He has written glosses and articles for the journals Bibliothèque universelle , Semaine littéraire , the liberal daily Journal de Genève and the Gazette de Lausanne . He also published the two non-fiction books Le Quattrocento (1901) and Venise au XVIIIe siècle (1907). His literary works can be divided into three areas: the poetry Rimes d'écolier (1891), the collections of novels Vieilles femmes (1895) and Jeunes ménages (1899) and the chronicles of the city of Geneva. The Geneva Chronicles, in particular, made him famous. These are Causeries genevoises (1902, reprint 1988), Le Livre de Blaise (1904, reprint 1998), Mon village (1909, reprint 1968) and La Genève de Töpffer (1914).

In 1909 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva .
