Philippe Varin (born August 8, 1952 in Reims ) is a French manager .

Life

Varin attended the Lycée privé Sainte-Geneviève and studied at the École polytechnique and the École nationale supérieure des mines . Between 2003 and 2007 he restructured and managed the steel and aluminum company Corus . In 2009 he replaced Christian Streiff in the management of the French car manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroën . In 2013, Varin tries to lead the company out of the red.

Varin pushed through thousands of job cuts (including a plant closure), a pay freeze, and investment cuts at PSA.

Varin is to be replaced by Carlos Tavares in 2014 (until August 2013 “second man” behind Renault boss Carlos Ghosn ).

At the end of November 2013, Varin's pension, which Peugeot had promised him from his 65th birthday, attracted much public attention when it became known that Peugeot had set aside around 21 million euros on its balance sheet for this case. A union had criticized the figure already mentioned in the 2012 annual report. Ministers Pierre Moscovici and Arnaud Montebourg also joined the protest.

Varin was elected as the new president on December 6, 2013 by the board of the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers ( ACEA ).

On January 8, 2015, the Areva Group's general assembly appointed him Chairman of the Board of Directors. Since May 2020 he has been President of the Board of Directors of the environmental group Suez .
