The Philippines spatula- tailed parrot ( Prioniturus discurus ) is a medium-sized member of the family of real parrots .

Appearance

The Philippines spatula-tailed parrot reaches a body length of 27 cm. It has green plumage that is significantly darker on the back. The upper part of the head is light blue or dark green. The neck and belly are yellow-green. The feet and beak are gray. The underside of the wings and the tail are dark green. At the end of the tail sit 2 long, dark, thin feathers with a spatulate black end. Males and females do not differ significantly in their plumage. The subspecies differ very clearly in the plumage color, some have a light blue head, while in other subspecies only the forehead is light blue.

distribution and habitat

The Philippines Spatelschwanzpapagei is on the islands of the Philippines to the südphilippinschen island of Jolo endemic . He lives in the forests and clearings of the islands. It is also found in banana plantations.

Way of life

Berries and other fruits, plant seeds and plant shoots serve as food for this parrot species. They usually move loudly through the canopy of tall trees in small groups. The cries of the birds are very shrill.

Reproduction

The Philippines' spatula-tailed parrot builds its nest high up in the trunks of dead trees. The incubation period is 17–23 days. Both parent animals look after the young. This species nests together in smaller colonies.

Due to its relatively wide distribution and since no threats from environmental changes are known for this species, the IUCN classifies this species as Least Concern .
