Phlegethon is a Finnish death and thrash metal band from Joensuu , which was founded in 1988 and has been active intermittently since then. The group is currently paused.

history

The band was founded in early 1988 by Teemu Hannonen, Juha Tykkyläinen and Lasse Pyykkö. Together, influenced by early Slayers and Sepultura , they wrote the first songs. They borrowed their band name from a book dealing with Greek mythology . The following year a first demo was recorded under the name Visio Dei Beatifica , which consists of five songs. Since the members were still missing a bassist, Jussi Nyblom, who had previously gained experience with other local bands, was added as bassist after the demo. In June 1990, another demo was recorded with Neutral Forest . At the end of the year the band signed a recording deal with Witchhunt Records . Since the members felt that they did not have enough material to make a full album, they turned to the release of an EP that had been recorded in Mix Man Studio . Since the band was not satisfied with the mix of Hannonen's vocals, this was remixed in May and new vocals were contributed by Nyblom. The EP was released in 1991 under the name Fresco Lungs and later re-released with two songs as a bonus. After appearances in Finland it came to a breakup in 1992. In 1995 the band got together again to record a few new songs, which resulted in the 1995 Demo Promo , on which Saku Hurskainen played the electric guitar instead of Juha Tykkyläinen, before they separated again shortly afterwards. In 2006 Lasse Pyykkö wrote new material, resulting in the demo Totems Within . In the following year another demo followed under the name Lava Poetry . In January 2010, the compilation Drifting in the Cryp was released via Xtreem Music , which consists of two CDs and contains the complete discography. The band is currently on pause.

style

Mindaugas “Plix” Lapinskas from voicesfromthedarkside.de stated in his review of Drifting in the Crypt that every release that is included on the compilation is completely different, as if it had been recorded by a completely different band. The 1990 demo offers a mixture of death and thrash metal, into which slow passages have occasionally been incorporated. The 1989 demo, on the other hand, is more of a mixture of punk , black and thrash metal. The songs sometimes lasted six to nine minutes and were therefore too long. Slow passages would also be processed again. The 1995 demo sounds strongly influenced by Sentenced , Gorefest and Carcass and is strongly oriented towards melody and groove . He also found the songs on the EP to be too long again, with influences from old Amorphis , My Dying Bride and Monumentum . The songs are simply structured, the last piece of the EP sounds influenced by industrial . The 2006 demo offers an energetic mix of Death and Thrash Metal in the style of Demolition Hammer and Exhorder . The 2007 demo is very similar, but more varied and elaborated. The Demolied Circle of the Hybrid Statues is classic raw death metal in the Swedish style. Luxi Lahtinen from metal-rules.com also reviewed the compilation and assigned the band to death and thrash metal. In the beginning the group played Thrash Metal in the style of Slayer mixed with some Death Metal. In the following time the band changed their style again and again and got closer to Death Metal on Fresco Lungs . The band then focused heavily on the use of keyboards, which was unusual for the time. Sometimes he was reminded of Nocturnus . Lava Poetry offers parallels to Pestilence , but is still comparable to Slayer. Overall, the band sounds more experienced. Lava Poetry offers a similar style, while Circle of the Hybrid Statues is reminiscent of early Dismember and Entombed .
