Phosphoproteins
Phosphoproteins are proteins that have been post-translationally modified by adding a phosphoryl group ( phosphorylation ) . The affected amino acids of the protein are mostly serine , threonine or tyrosine ( eukaryotes ), or aspartic acid or histidine ( prokaryotes ). Phosphorylation is catalyzed by protein kinases and removed by phosphatases .
In 2010, the UniProt database contained over 90,000 entries on phosphoproteins. The PhosphoSitePlus database registered around 206,000 phosphorylation sites in just under 20,000 phosphoproteins in 2013. About a third of the mammalian proteome are phosphoproteins.
