Physalis mollis is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Physalis mollis is a 15 to 50 centimeter high, perennial plant that arises from a strong rhizome that is deep in the earth . Often slender, weak rhizomes are also formed. The stem axis is erect, occasionally branching, the branches are ascending. The hair consists predominantly of tree-shaped-star-shaped branched trichomes , which are shorter than 1 millimeter, as well as of 2 to 4 millimeter-long, articulated, tree-shaped-star-shaped branched or unbranched trichomes, which occur scattered at the lower nodes . The leaf blades are egg-shaped, are 2.5 to 7 inches long and 1.5 to 6 (rarely up to 7) inches wide and are tomentose. The leaf margins are roughly toothed, irregular or almost entire. The base is cut off, the leaf blade is pointed towards the front. The length of the petiole is one third to four fifths the length of the leaf blade.

The flowers stand individually in the leaf axils on 10 to 25 (rarely up to 35) millimeter long pedicels . The calyx is 6 to 10 (rarely up to 12) millimeters long and hairy with short, tree-shaped, star-shaped trichomes. Occasionally long, unbranched and articulated trichomes also appear. The calyx lobes are 2.5 to 5.5 millimeters long. The crown is colored yellow and has five pale brown to dark brown spots in the crown throat. The length of the crown is between 9.5 and 15 (rarely 17) millimeters. The anthers are yellow or, rarely, blue or purple, they are 3 to 4 millimeters long. The stamens are about half as wide as the anthers.

When the fruit is ripe, the calyx is enlarged to 2.5 to 4 (rarely up to 5) centimeters in length and 1.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter. It is colored green and is ten-angled in cross-section, at the base it is indented. The flower stalk extends to 20 to 40 (rarely up to 52) millimeters.

Distribution and locations

Physalis mollis is a species of the coastal plains and mountain provinces of the US states of Arkansas and Louisiana and the adjacent parts of Oklahoma and Texas . It grows there on sandy prairie soils , along roads and in disturbed habitats.
