Physalis pennellii is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

Physalis pennellii is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 5 to 20 cm. The hair consists of a mixture of short and long trichomes , which are articulated and partially glandular. The longest trichomes reach a length of 1.5 mm. The leaves are ovate to elongated ovate or almost round at the base. The largest leaves are 13 to 32 (rarely up to 40) mm long and 12 to 25 (rarely up to 30) mm wide. The leaf margin is irregularly occupied with short teeth or wavy or entire. The leaf stalks are 5 to 11 (rarely up to 20) mm long.
The flowers are on 3 to 6 mm long peduncles . The calyx is hemispherical and densely hairy with long trichomes at flowering time. It measures 4 to 5 mm in length and at the base of the calyx lobes 4 to 5 mm in diameter. The calyx lobes are triangular to ovate-triangular and 2 to 3 mm long. The crown is yellow in color and mottled, it measures 7 to 13 mm in length and 10 to 14 mm in width. The anthers are purple in color and about 2.5 mm long.
When the fruit is ripe, the calyx becomes 15 to 20 mm long and 11 to 13 mm wide and has a ten-rib cross-section. The stem extends to 9 to 15 mm. The berry is 8 to 12 mm long.
Occurrence
The species is common in Mexico .
