Physochlaina orientalis is a plant type from the genus of Physochlaina in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The species occurs in the Balkans and Asia.

description

Physochlaina orientalis is a perennial plant. It forms an ascending rhizome that is irregularly thickened and can reach a diameter of 1 cm. The few stems grow upright and reach heights of up to 60 cm. The hair of the plant consists of glandular trichomes that become denser towards the tip and are particularly noticeable on the inflorescence stalks and calyxes . The leaves are up to 11 cm long and 5.5 cm wide. They are dark green in color, with entire margins or sometimes wavy, towards the front they are curled, tapering to a point. The shape of the leaf blade is elongated, triangular-ovoid, the base is heart-shaped, wedge-shaped and tapers towards the petiole.

The inflorescences are terminal and are almost umbel-shaped . The flowers are on short flower stalks that are up to 0.5 cm long. The calyx is up to 0.8 cm long and has five weakly pronounced teeth, which have about a third of the length of the calyx. The calyx on the fruit doubles in size or even more, and the calyx throat and calyx teeth enlarge and become leathery. The calyx takes on an almost cylindrical shape, on which ten longitudinal veins can be seen, the hairiness of the calyx is mostly permanent. At flowering time, the crown is a little twice as long as the calyx, it is purple in color and has a white base. It is set with five crown lobes and is tubular-bell-shaped. The stamens are hairy at the base, they are about as long as the crown. The violet colored stylus stands out over the crown and has a head-shaped scar .

The fruits are spherical lidded capsules that are up to 0.9 to 1 cm in diameter. They have a barely noticeable lid that falls off when ripe, on which the base of the stylus is permanent. They are enclosed by the constant and pointed calyx. The seeds are bright yellow and circular-elliptical dotted.

The flowering period extends from April to May.
