Pia Gilbert
Pia Gilbert (born June 1, 1921 in Kippenheim ; † May 14, 2018 ) was a German-American composer , conductor , pianist and university teacher.
biography
Pia Gilbert, b. Wertheimer, grew up in a German-Jewish family in Baden. After the Nazis came to power, the family decided to emigrate to the USA in 1937. Pia Gilbert studied at the "New York College of Music" and worked as a piano accompanist for Lotte Goslar , Doris Humphrey and others.
In 1946 she was hired as a piano accompanist for dance classes at the University of California (UCLA). At this university she was involved in the development of the “Music for Dance” course from 1947 and directed it until her retirement in 1985.
In 1956 she was appointed assistant professor and in 1966 full professor of dance. In addition to teaching, she has worked as a composer and conductor of numerous modern dance productions. Her compositions were initially conceived primarily as dance and drama music, but at the same time showed a tendency towards experimental boldness. Through her acquaintance with John Cage , her music became increasingly "autonomous" since the 1970s; she herself spoke of "music per se".
Since 1986, Pia Gilbert has taught music aesthetics and philosophy, music history and composition for dance at the Juilliard School in New York .
