Pia Praetorius (* 1963 in Nordhausen ) is a German church musician and cantor . She is a specialist in early music .

Life

Pia Praetorius studied church music at the University of Church Music in Halle / Saale. She worked as a cantor in Berlin and Sonthofen . From 1999 to 2017 she was cantor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Egidien in Nuremberg .

Her musical work focuses on early music and new music . Their programs range from Latin American Renaissance music to multimedia staged performances as well as dance and opera productions. As part of the America Festival in Nuremberg, she conducted the world premiere of Gloria Coates' 12th symphony .

She worked with the video artists Christoph Brech , Ivonne Mohr and Steffen Ruyl Cramer, Ulli Sigg, Stephan Windischmann, the directors Claudia Doderer, Carlos Manuel and Cornelia Heger, the light and stage artists Fred Pommerehn and Lutz Deppe, and the choreographers Cayetano Soto and Shang Chi Sun together. She has a longstanding artistic friendship and collaboration with the wood sculptor Andreas Kuhnlein .

Praetorius founded the schola cantorum nürnberg , an ensemble that specializes in performing music from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as the St. Egidien Chamber Choir and works regularly with L'arpa festante and Les cornets noir as well as other music specialists 16th and 17th centuries.

In addition, she deals with the Nuremberg music history of the 16th century, among other things through the study of choir books from St. Egidien. She put unpublished works in the score and arranged for re-performances in concerts and church services, which were also published on CD.

Since 2017, she and her husband Wolfgang Kropp have been developing Weißenbrunn Palace in Ebern into a music and cultural center in the Haßberge Mountains . A hall was set up as a music salon in the newly renovated baroque palace . Chamber concerts and courses from the newly founded music academy take place here regularly.
