Pia-Beate Zimmermann (born September 17, 1956 in Braunschweig ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ). From 2008 to 2013 she was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament , has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013 and was state chairman of Left Lower Saxony alongside Anja Stoeck from March 4, 2017 to June 18, 2018 .

Life

Zimmermann graduated from secondary school in 1972, followed by commercial training, which she finished in 1975. After completing her apprenticeship, she took her secondary school diploma and studied social affairs from 1980 to 1984 . After completing her studies, she worked as a disabled worker until 1999 . Then she was looking for a job until 2005 and trained as a media designer . After completing this training, she worked in the constituency office of the Bundestag member Dorothée Menzner (Die Linke). She is a member of the ver.di union .

politics

She grew up politically with the Socialist Youth of Germany - Die Falken . The main focus of her work with the “Falken” was peace and disarmament , education policy , girls and women’s policy, as well as internal educational measures. Together with others, she was responsible for the content and organizational management of youth camps for several years. She was deputy chairwoman for the Braunschweig district for six years. From 1972 to 1996 she was a member of the SPD. In 2000 she joined the PDS and co-founded the Wolfsburg district association. From 2006 to 2012 Zimmermann was a member of the Wolfsburg City Council.

In the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2013 , the left could not overcome the five percent hurdle and Zimmermann resigned from the state parliament. On April 20, 2013, the state representative assembly of Die Linke Niedersachsen nominated her for third place on the state list for the 2013 federal election, through which she succeeded in entering the Bundestag. In 2017 Zimmermann was nominated for number 1 on the Lower Saxony state list for the federal election and again made it into the German Bundestag.

At the beginning of March 2017 she was elected chairwoman of the state association Die Linke Niedersachsen at the state party conference in Osnabrück with 69.43% of the delegate votes; she was a member of the state executive for the second time. Here, together with Anja Stoeck , who was elected to office in February 2015 and confirmed at this party congress, she formed the first female dual leadership of the regional association. On June 18, 2018, however, she resigned her party office because she was unable to "live up to the great responsibility and my own claim to political cooperation that really serves the national association of our party". Lars Leopold from Eime (Hildesheim district) was chosen as his successor.
