The Piedmontese saxifrage ( Saxifraga pedemontana ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The Piedmontese saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 6 to 20 centimeters. It forms cushions with non-flowering, densely leafed shoots. The basal leaves in the rosettes are weakly fleshy, flat, multi-veined, hand-shaped to wedge-shaped and narrow into the stem. They are all densely glandular and divided into 3 to 7 forward-facing sections almost to the middle. The stem is strong, upright, little leafy and hairy with glands. It bears 3 to 10 flowers in a crowded, umbel-like or panicle inflorescence. The petals are 10 to 15 millimeters long, three-veined, white, obverse -shaped and narrowed in a wedge shape. The calyx is hairy and only half as long as the crown. not superordinate.

Flowering time is from June to August.

Occurrence

The Piedmontese saxifrage comes in the subspecies. pedemontana from the Maritime Alps to the Cottian and Graian Alps subalpine to alpine on shady rocks and rubble on silicate at altitudes of 1500 to 2800 meters.

Subspecies

In Europe and North Africa five subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Saxifraga pedemontana subsp. cervicornis (Viv.) Engler ; it has the chromosome number 2n = 26, 42 or 44 and occurs only in Corsica and Sardinia
  • Saxifraga pedemontana subsp. cymosa Engler ; it occurs only in the Carpathian Mountains and in the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula
  • Saxifraga pedemontana subsp. demnatensis (Cosson ex Batt.) Maire ; it occurs only in North Africa. The chromosome number is 2n = 66.
  • Saxifraga pedemontana subsp. pedatifida (Bonnier & Layens) Jalas (Syn .: S. ajugifolia L. ); it has the chromosome number 2n = 32 and occurs only in southern France
  • Saxifraga pedemontana subsp. pedemontana ; it has the chromosome number 2n = 40 and occurs only in the southwestern Alps.
