Pierluigi Bembo
Pierluigi Bembo (also Pier Luigi Bembo ; * December 16, 1823 in Venice ; † January 24, 1882 Venice) was the last mayor of Venice appointed by the Austrians from 1861 to 1866. At that time they still carried the title Podestà .
Life
At the beginning of his tenure, Italy was unified and numerous Venetians demanded independence from the Austrian Empire . On July 3, 1860, some cafes were closed because explosive political issues had been discussed too publicly there. On July 19, there was a provocation in San Giuliano by means of firecrackers , which affected the Austrian café, the Caffè del Trovatore . Marc'Antonio Gaspari refused on September 12th to take part in the proposals for the three mayoral candidates. On December 25th, Pietro Zeno and Francesco Donà dalle Rose also refused. Pier Luigi Bembo, however, accepted on April 16, 1861. He was elected on May 7th and took office a week later.
In order to counteract the most pressing social problems, the Congregazione di Carità was created in 1861, four years later the Libertà Cattolica newspaper was created, the first clerical paper in Veneto , whose publication was discontinued in 1866 . Don Pietro Balan , a historian born in Este in 1840, took over the management . 1867–73 he published the Diritto cattolico in Modena .
The Comitato Veneto attacked on October 26, 1861 the stay of the Empress Elisabeth in Venice, which remained until May. On December 2, 1861, Emperor Franz Joseph I stayed in Venice, again on December 22. But the Austrian rule in Veneto was less and less recognized. Associations emerged that had set themselves the goal of joining Italy. In August 1865 Italy offered Austria 500 million francs for Venice and Veneto, but Vienna refused.
In 1864 Venice had 113,305 inhabitants. In that year the Canale di Malamocco was dug; in December a contract was signed to light the city with gas . 1866 was the registration office .
On April 24, 1866, Pierluigi Bembo was re-elected Podestà. On May 22, all those who had emigrated against the current law and fought against Austria were subject to martial law . The Italian army was defeated at Custozza on June 24 , the fleet at Lissa on July 20 . However, as a result of the defeat by Prussia in the Battle of Königgrätz , Austria was forced to conclude an armistice with Italy on August 12, 1866 and to give up Veneto. Italy paid Vienna 35 million Austrian florins and assumed the debt of Veneto. The political prisoners were released on October 11, and plebiscites were held on October 21 and 22, confirming the connection with Italy.
